Words of Solitude

This beautiful scenery would have been agreeable with just the landscape in it, but the single man's silhouette (even though very distant) gives it a new focus of interest and a subtle plot to contemplate over.

On the purely technical side, the photograph is excellent, there's hardly any flaw in it, therefore I'll direct all my attention towards its artistry.
Twilight always grants splendid colors and those are skillfully captured here. They are a bit dark, but this only enhances the sense of solitude and silence of this early night. Also, there is a chromatic polarity in the picture, with warm hues dominating left side and cold ones dominating the right. The sole exception is the cliff to the right, which together with the piece of clear sky directs the eye towards the silhouette.

The composition though seems somewhat chaotic, without a distinct structure, as far as the landscape is concerned - which of course greatly depends on the natural conditions. However, it also has some real merits, like the aforementioned polarity, or the man's position. Finally, the composition is redeemed by the silhouette looking towards the town, which is the main fable in the picture anyways.

An elusive, yet very important role is due to the clouds. They define the warm-to-cold gradient very well, and their variable forms and shades make the picture much more enjoyable. Also, I like how they are slightly motion-blurred at places, and their direction is perfectly headed towards the town. To me, they look like a materialization of the man's thoughts, flying that way. A truly wonderful abstraction.
