Nah, it's the moon. The mercury is a metaphor for the dropping temperatures meaning the thermometer is dropping. :D

Ah, the element mercury! Which had been used in thermometers. Got it.
Also called quicksilver.
Oder alternativ im Deutschen Quecksilber.
